Simple Step by Step Guide to Google Webmasters Setup
One of my friends asked me how to setup Google Webmasters. I decided to make up this blog so others can access it as well.
A lot of people sign with Google Webmasters and submit their sitemap. This is how it can be done:
- Come up with a key phrase people might type in Google to find your site. For example you might decide the phrase of "mycountry great history" is what defines your target market. (This is just an example).
- Create a Google email account with Gmail. You can get one for free at: http://www.gmail.com/ by clicking on Create an Account button. Once your Gmail account is set, you would have something like: mycountrygreathistory@gmail.com or similar.
- You need a file called sitemap.xml. Later on (last step) you submit this sitemap.xml to Google Webmasters. To create this sitemap.xml you can go to http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ and they generate one for your site for free. At the end you would have a file called sitemap.xml on your computer hard drive.
- Using FTP or your preferred way, upload the sitemap.xml to your website.
- Get a Webmasters account at www.google.com/webmasters and sign in with the Google gmail account (mycountrygreathistory@gmail.com) you created above.
- Once in Google Webmasters, click on Add a Site button. Google asks you to upload a file to your server(Looks like 12bc78f.html). This is to verify that in fact the site does belong to you. once you uploaded the html file, click on Verify button (in Google Webmasters).
- Next step is to wait (Maximum wait is about 24 hours).
- Now login to your Google Webmasters again and at the left click on Site Configuration then click on Site map. At the right hand side click on "Submit a Site map". Point it to the one you uploaded it previously in Step 4.
- Wait for a day or two.
- Login to your Google Webmasters and take a look at the sitemap status. It should have a green check mark beside it. There should be no error message. (You might see error messages but sometimes all you need to do is wait for a couple of days or maximum a week, and the error will go away).
Congratulation, it is done.
